How to Measure the SIze of a Ball Bearing

Replacing a Ball Bearing or even wondering what the size or diameter of the bearing is requires making a proper measurement. Ball bearing scan be used for many applications including computer hard drives and musical instruments. Finding the size of a ball bearing can be done when you have the right measuring tool to use, such as a Vernier Caliper.

Things You'll Need:

  • Vernier caliper

    Verify that the Vernier caliper is properly zeroed before it is used. The first mark on the main scale or ruler needs to align with the first line on the secondary scale that is on the indicator window

    Hold the Vernier caliper in your hand and slide open the jaws using you thumb.

  3. 3

    Place the ball bearing between the jaws on the caliper.

  4. 4

    Push the jaws closed around the ball bearing.

  5. 5

    View the measurement or reading, from the indicator window on the ruler, for the proper size of the ball bearing. A Vernier caliper will have the option to obtain measurements in both centimeters and inches.
