Deep Groove Ball Bearing

How to Remove Bearings From Skate Wheels

Skate bearings are used on inline skates, skateboards, scooters and traditional quad roller skates. Removing and cleaning roller bearings is essential to the good performance of your wheels. Cleaning skate bearings requires just a couple of tools and some patience. You can buy bearing pullers that not only pull the bearings out of the wheels but also press the clean bearings back into the wheel.Ball Bearings , Deep Groove Ball Bearing,Nonstandard bearing , Stainless steel bearing

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bearing press/puller combination tool
  • Cleaning solution
  • Lubricant
  • Newspapers
  • Soft cleaning cloth
  • Nut driver

    Removing the Bearings

  1. 1

Gather your equipment and cleaning solution, which can be an organically friendly grease remover or a traditional grease solvent.

  2. 2

Organize your workstation--use a table or a bench. It will take a few minutes per wheel to remove and clean the bearings.

  3. 3

Cover your workstation with newspapers or similar material for easy cleanup.

  4. 4

Take each wheel off its axle by removing the nut that holds the wheel in place. Remove all the wheels at the same time to help you avoid getting the cleaning solution on the leather of the boots.

  5. 5

Take all the bearings out of the wheels before you begin the cleaning process. Insert the bearing puller into the hole of the bearings and seat it to pull the bearings loose. Your bearing puller should come with complete directions as to where to grab the bearings. The bearings may have a cover, which will be either fastened with a wire C-ring or simply snapped in place.

  6. 6

Remove the cover on the bearings in order to have full access to the inside of the bearings.

    Cleaning the Bearings

  7. 1

Spin the bearings between your fingers and listen for the sound they make. Dirty bearings will have a scraping noise and will not roll freely.

  8. 2

Drop the bearings into the cleaning solution and let them soak for about five minutes to loosen the dirt and oil, then scrub them with an old toothbrush. Spin the bearings between your fingers frequently to listen for a quiet smooth roll of the bearings.

  9. 3

Replace the oil in the bearings with oil purchased specifically for skate bearings.

  10. 4

Replace the covers after wiping them with a soft cloth soaked in the cleaning solution. Use the bearing press side of the bearing puller to insert the bearings into the wheels.

  11. 5

Clean the axles with the cloth soaked in the cleaning solution. Lightly oil the axles, then slide the wheel/bearing assembly over the axle and replace the nut on the end of the axle.
